Should President Obama become the first African American on a U.S. coin? Regardless of how much you agree or disagree with the politics of President Obama, becoming the first African American President is an amazing accomplishment!
I can hear those on the Left without hesitation state emphatically: YES! To be the first African American President he deserves it. Look at what has he done for the economy, ‘Middle Class Economics’ term used during his State of Union presentation in 2015, the Stimulus Package, look at gas prices etc.
I detect some sophism’s here, but I will focus on one specifically from the aforementioned. Isn’t the President biracial? When you are biracial, you are not African American, you are biracial. I’m biracial, a Mulatto to be more specific, which is an offspring of a black and white parent. Or in some cases, as author Ambrose Bierce defined in his classic ‘The Devil’s Dictionary’: “A child of two races, ashamed of both”!
I can hear those on the Right say without hesitation: NO! He is a Muslim; he wants to take my guns away, etc. Again, there are some sophism’s here too. He was a member of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s ‘Emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ’, which has the repute of having a large population of devout Muslims attend every Sunday :). Also, remember that the 2nd Amendment allows the right to bear arms, there is no mention of ammunition. Therefore, the President does not need to abolish the 2nd Amendment. He can simply make it illegal to sell ammunition.
Emotions come and go, but empirical evidence remains forever. The above was not a test of your emotions about the President and his policies or your devotion to your party affiliation. Yet, I can hear the debate of yes he should be the first or no he shouldn’t. I have actually heard the debate, and admittedly I chuckle and then interject with prefacing Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”. The above was a test based on the command of the empirical evidence below:
- Booker T. Washington was the First African American on a U.S. Half Dollar minted from 1946-1951.
- Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver were also on a U.S. Half Dollar minted from 1951-1954.
- These coins were minted to stop the spread of Communism in the African American Community.
The composition of these coins is 90% Silver & 10% Copper.
I know you’ve heard about the above a thousand times during Black History Month :). The reason you probably don’t and or have not heard about Booker T. Washington is because he believed in African American’s becoming independent, entrepreneurs, self-sufficient without the benevolence of the government.
Mr. Washington was keenly aware of the demise that would await the African American community if they accepted the path of W.E.B. Dubois, founder of the N.A.A.C.P, who is highly regarded in the African American community and discussed about throughout public academia and African American churches in the month of February. Were you aware that W.E.B Dubois was a Communist?
Booker T. Washington recognized that if social programs/government handouts were the path chosen the vices of dependency would lead to the demise of African Americans. Essentially, he foresaw the following:
Whenever, you hear the mention of the ‘Black side of town’ are these the words/thoughts/emotion that first come to mind: lack of motivation, lack creativity, unemployment, low wages, high crime, gangs, lost, hopelessness, hate, tension, rims, loud music, loud people, lack of command of the English language, children parenting children even if the parent is in their 30’s due to lack of maturity, men absent in the home? I know because I grew up and spent most of my youth in African American communities, single parenthood, and I’m an immigrant. I will let you decide which path was the wiser W.E.B Dubois or Booker T. Washington.
CHALLENGE OF THE DAY! Ask someone should President Obama be the first African American on a U.S. Coin, then pause, chuckle and say to yourself: “Wow, this is just like the article”. The most important task in this challenge is to correct the sophisms and emotions and impart empirical evidence. And, yes I recommend quoting Hosea 4:6, regardless of your faith :).
